#givewhatfiretakes Restores Dignity for Fire Victims

American Red Cross
Red Cross volunteers extend a helping hand to these families...

In southern Nevada, the American Red Cross responds to a disaster every 19 hours – most of these are home fires. In many cases, the only things a family may have left are the clothes in which they escaped. Their belongings and, often times, their dignity have been stripped away. They may not be able to even wash their face or brush their teeth.

Red Cross volunteers extend a helping hand to these families by offering them the means to start the road to recovery. These volunteers, called Disaster Action Teams (DAT), are on call 24 hours a day and ready to help the community anywhere in southern Nevada.

Shelter, food, water, and clothes are the preliminary needs of victims of a home fire. The Red Cross gives financial assistance to families so they can buy essential items that will help them return to their daily routines, like a pair of eye-glasses or backpacks and books so children can return to school.

The Red Cross also believes in working hard to prevent tragedies before they happen. In partnership with local fire departments, Red Cross volunteers and community partners go door to door in neighborhoods to speak with residents about fire preparedness. If a resident does not have a working fire alarm, batteries are replaced or an appointment is set up to have one installed. If you need smoke detectors in your home or batteries for existing smoke alarms, be sure to set up an appointment to have them installed for free by calling (702) 697-1707.

Volunteers also explain the importance of having a household evacuation plan and the need to practice it twice a year. Having a solid evacuation plan and working smoke detectors will save family members the precious seconds that they may need to escape safely.

The Red Cross is not a government agency and relies on the generous gifts from local donors to continue serving the community. Financial donations are welcomed in any amount.

The following is a look at how money can help get a family back on their feet:

• $10 – could provide 2 blankets

• $100 – could provide clothes/shoes

• $550 – could provide financial assistance for one family
