Red Cross Volunteers to Help With Blue Star Mothers' "Freedom Boxes" Event this Weekend

ALBANY, NY (November 7, 2013) As Veterans’ Day approaches show your appreciation for the United States Armed Forces by giving back to our local men and women who are currently serving oversees.

The American Red Cross of Northeastern New York is supporting the Capital Region NY2 Blue Star Mothers’ annual “Holiday Freedom Boxes” for the Troops event this weekend.

At the event, Blue Star Mothers and volunteers will fill Holiday Freedom Boxes with food, household items, and various other items to be sent to troops overseas.

Suggested donation items include: Trail Mix, Pop Tarts, Pringles, Twinkies, Fruit Snacks, Slim Jims, Beef Jerky, Ground Coffee, K-Cups, Sanitary Wipes/Baby Wipes, Lip Balm, Shampoo (4 oz or less), Bar Soap, Toothpaste/Toothbrush, Deodorant, Puzzle Books, Playing Cards, Envelopes/Note Paper, Individual Size, Tissues, Quart Size Ziplock Bags, Cash Donations to cover the $12.35 in shipping for each box

WHAT: Holiday Freedom Boxes for the Troops. Schedule of events to include:

• Opening Ceremony

• Colonie Brass Choir

• Albany Pipe and Drum

• Dan McCoy, Albany County Executive

• Nicaya Rios, American Red Cross Youth Volunteer, Singing National Anthem

• Siena ROTC (Color Guard)

• Patriot Guard Riders

• Voices of Harmony

• Capital District Youth Chorale

WHERE: The Center Court of Colonie Center Mall, 131 Colonie Center, Albany

WHEN: November 9th starting at Noon
