A confirmed tornado touched down in the town of Duanesburg last Thursday, and volunteers from the American Red Cross Northeastern New York Region were immediately on the scene to assess and respond to the needs of local residents. Two volunteers manning an Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV) traveled through the affected area to determine the extent of damage, distribute emergency supplies and speak with residents to understand their most immediate needs. In the first 24 hours following the storm, the Red Cross distributed bottled water and more than 350 snacks to those dealing with its aftermath.

As the storm response continued to develop through the weekend, Red Cross representatives worked in close coordination with the affected communities and local partners to provide additional support. The disaster response veterans' service organization, Team Rubicon, deployed or activated in place more than 20 volunteers from two regions to respond to the tornado event, and the Red Cross provided primary coordination to support them.

Over two days, Team Rubicon completed four work orders for local homeowners ranging from debris sorting and clean up to tree removal and vehicle salvage. They cleared rooftops of dangerous loose materials and repaired damaged home entryways to make them safer for residents and their families.

The Red Cross was instrumental in getting Team Rubicon set up on-site, and connected them with additional resources throughout their operation. "We made some great connections in the area and none of it would have been possible without the [American Red Cross]," said Elana Duffy, Regional Administrator for Team Rubicon Region II. "The volunteers, mostly veterans and first response personnel, were very grateful for the opportunity to serve on Memorial Day."
