BUFFALO, NY, August 12, 2013 – Volunteers from the American Red Cross, Serving Erie & Niagara Counties are assisting with the immediate emergency needs of 21 people following three separate fires in Erie County over the weekend. Red Cross assistance typically includes vouchers for temporary housing, food and clothing as well as mental health support. The families will be coming to Red Cross headquarters to meet with caseworkers to develop a long-term recovery plan.
Volunteers from the Disaster Action Team (DAT) were first called to Jersey Street in Buffalo early Saturday morning, where they assisted eight people from six families displaced by fire. A separate team of volunteers responded to a call on Niagara Street in Buffalo later in the day Saturday to assist two people. Sunday, DAT members responded to the scene of a fire on Sierra Drive in Cheektowaga to provide assistance to assist 11 people from three families.
The American Red Cross, Serving Erie & Niagara Counties spends an average of just over $1,000 when responding to a single house fire affecting a family of four.
