The American Red Cross of Cortland County has selected Sharon and Bob Fouts and Frank VanSickle as its Volunteers of the Month for October 2013. The Volunteer of the Month program, sponsored by Dunkin’ Donuts, recognizes dedicated Red Cross volunteers for their hard work and commitment to the humanitarian organization.

Sharon and Bob Fouts are retired farmers who joined the Red Cross several years ago after seeing an advertisement in the Cortland Standard newspaper and volunteering through the Retired Senior Volunteer Program. They enjoy hands-on work and are always willing to help in the local Red Cross office. They also volunteer for the Cortland County Disaster Action Team (DAT), work at blood drives, and transport veterans to the Syracuse Veterans Administration Medical Center.

Last year, the Fouts spent two weeks on deployment in the Rockaways on Long Island for the Superstorm Sandy relief effort. They spent their days working in the kitchen of a Red Cross shelter serving hot meals, including Thanksgiving dinner, to displaced residents and volunteers, and their nights sleeping on cots in a gymnasium with more than 300 people.

Frank VanSickle is the “go-to” guy on the Cortland DAT, handling everything from client casework to preparing the monthly DAT schedule. Originally from Greenport, Long Island, VanSickle graduated from SUNY Cortland and made Central New York his home.

A retired senior case manager for the Department of Social Services, VanSickle has traveled for the Red Cross to disasters in Binghamton, Florida, Louisiana and Mississippi. He said he enjoys working with disaster services because “it lets me use my skill sets and I enjoy working with people.”

Dunkin’ Donuts has generously supplied nine Red Cross chapters and branches throughout Central and Northern New York with gift cards to distribute monthly to deserving volunteers. The Fouts and VanSickle have each received a $25 gift cards as a token of appreciation for their volunteer service.
