Volunteers play a crucial role in ensuring that the Red Cross delivers its services.

The American Red Cross of Central New York is hosting a volunteer enrollment event for Cortland County residents at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19, at the Red Cross office at 50 Clinton Ave., Cortland.
The event is for residents who are interested in helping others and giving back to their communities through the American Red Cross. Red Cross staff will provide an orientation of the organization and an overview of various volunteer opportunities that are available within the Red Cross lines of service: Disaster Services, Blood Services, Service to the Armed Forces, and Health and Safety Services.

The Red Cross is also searching for Cortland County volunteers to join its Disaster Action Team (DAT), which responds to local emergencies and large nationwide disasters. Locally, DAT volunteers respond to emergencies such as house fires, floods, natural disasters and transportation accidents such as the recent bus crash on Interstate-81. Relief efforts range from providing food and shelter to offering emotional support to the victims.

The Red Cross invites people to attend the event and consider volunteering regardless of their experience levels. While needs may vary based on current events, the Red Cross will do its best to accommodate everyone’s desire to get involved.
“The Red Cross is always looking for people with various backgrounds, talents and skill levels to join our team,” said Julie Mucilli, Volunteer Services Specialist. “With volunteers comprising 94 percent of our workforce, volunteers play a crucial role in ensuring that the Red Cross delivers its services in our communities. Please join us to learn more about how you can serve your community as a Red Cross volunteer.”

To RSVP for the event, please contact Mucilli at or call 607-753-1182.
