The American Red Cross will be hosting volunteer recruitment events in Chenango and Tioga Counties on Saturday, May 7.
They will be held 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. at Tioga Opportunities Inc. located at 9 Sheldon Guiles Blvd. in Owego and 9:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. at the Oxford Library located at 8 Fort Hill Park in Oxford.
Last year, volunteers for Southern Tier Chapter helped 354 local families who faced home fires and other disaster situations. They trained 8,989 people in lifesaving skills, assisted 85 military members, veterans and their families, and collected 18,334 blood donations. Volunteers also went door-to-door in neighborhoods at high risk for home fires to install 228 smoke alarms and to teach people about home fire safety.
The recruitment events will review volunteer opportunities within different lines of services in the Red Cross: Disaster Services, Blood Services, Services to the Armed Forces, and Health and Safety Services.
The volunteer recruitment events are open to the public and welcome to volunteers of all skills and levels of experience. Each event will start with an orientation and overview about the Red Cross and volunteer opportunities. Those interested in joining the Disaster Action Team and responding to local disasters in the community are welcome to stay for a Disaster Cycle Services Overview, as well as attend future classes.
