Holiday Cheer for Local Families Who Need it Most

Holiday Cheer for Local Families that Need it Most.
"This is a great time for the kids to come out and just forget about things that are going on and get in the Christmas spirit."

This past Saturday, the Red Cross kicked off the holiday season with their 3rd annual Winter Wonderland event for children displaced by a recent disaster such as a home fire or a building explosion.

During the event, generously hosted by the Hard Rock Café, they reunited with approximately 100 New Yorkers who, only a few weeks and months prior, had turned to the Red Cross following a life-changing disaster.

Winter Wonderland featured gift bags, food, games, face-painting, music, magic and some very special guests—Santa Claus, Miss USA, Miss Universe, Spiderman, and Frozen characters Elsa and Anna.

“The joy of the children upon receiving the gifts provided enormous motivation to all of us who seek to offer comfort to disaster survivors, particularly during the holiday season,” said Josh Lockwood, Greater NY Red Cross CEO. “Thank you to all our partners, including presenting sponsor Zurich Insurance, who made it possible.”

Among those in attendance were Will Ashley, his wife and their three small children. This past October, the Ashley family was left homeless following a fire that destroyed their Bay Shore home.

“This is a great time for the kids to come out and just forget about things that are going on and get in the Christmas spirit,” said Ashley. “This is really great. Thank you!”
