The American Red Cross, Greater Rochester Chapter is proud to announce that Canandaigua National Bank & Trust has made a $3,000 donation to support the Disaster Relief Fund. Employees collected these funds in response to the Spring 2014 floods in the Finger Lakes region.
“On behalf of the American Red Cross, I want to say thank you to everyone at Canandaigua National Bank & Trust for this incredibly generous donation,” said Susan Aiello, Executive Director of the Greater Rochester Chapter. “It’s this support of our Disaster Relief Fund that allows to perform our vital mission of helping the Finger Lakes community prevent, prepare for and respond to disasters from flooding to house fires 365 days a year.”
“We are delighted to support the fine work of the American Red Cross, its employees, and volunteers,” said Steve Martin, Senior Vice President, Canandaigua National Bank & Trust.
In May of 2014, much of the Finger Lakes region was affected by flooding, with Penn Yan and the surrounding area being particularly hard hit. Red Cross staff and volunteers opened a shelter at the Penn Yan Academy in the first hours of the response that remained open for several days. During the course of the weeks-long response, members of the Disaster Workforce provided 34 overnight shelter stays, served nearly 600 meals and snacks, distributed 238 clean-up kits and provided emotional support and dozens of referrals to help members of the community get back on their feet.
The single biggest disaster the American Red Cross responds to is house fires. In the three counties currently covered by the Greater Rochester Chapter, the Red Cross responded to 214 separate fires between July 1, 2013-June 30, 2014, providing food, clothing, shelter and support to 333 families.
The Red Cross provides an average of just over $1,000 in direct financial assistance when responding to a single house fire affecting a family of four.
