As part of their application for entrance into the National Honor Society, Fairport High School juniors Christian Conner, Michaela Meissner and Heather Nortz recently contacted the American Red Cross to volunteer in a leadership role to assist with disaster relief efforts.

Conner, Meissner and Nortz are all members of the school’s Cross Country Team and organized a canister drive during their events, engaging their entire team of 51 athletes to participate by donating money to the Red Cross. The trio encouraged people to donate at their events and worked with their coaches to send text messages reminding their teammates to donate.

On November 6, 2013, Conner, Meissner and Nortz toured the American Red Cross, Greater Rochester Chapter, located at 50 Prince Street, and presented their donations to Jose Latalladi, Senior Disaster Program Manager.

“It was a great success, and they raised more than $130 for disaster relief,” said Nancy Blaschak, CEO, American Red Cross, Western NY and the Finger Lakes Regions. “Through a simple act of kindness, Christian, Heather and Michaela are helping others in times of crisis. Thanks to their support, the Red Cross will continue to be there to provide emergency shelter, food, clothing and counseling to people who suffer loss due to fires, floods and other disasters. We are touched by their heartfelt efforts.”

The American Red Cross is not a government agency, and relies on the generosity of the American public to perform its humanitarian mission. People wishing to make a gift to support the Disaster Relief Fund this holiday season are asked to visit, call 1-800-REDCROSS or text the word REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation (charges will appear on cell phone bill).
