The American Red Cross, Central New York Chapter continues to help area residents affected by recent flooding. 20 people spent Wednesday night at the Red Cross shelter at St. Lucy’s Church, 432 Gifford Street in Syracuse. Volunteers are providing residents with shelter, food, blankets, and emotional support, and caseworkers are meeting with affected families to work on long-term recovery plans. Anyone in need of assistance can call the Red Cross at 315-234-2200.
Also Wednesday morning, Disaster Action Team (DAT) volunteers responded to a fire on Kirkpatrick Street in Syracuse, providing immediate emergency assistance for three people. Red Cross assistance typically includes funding for temporary housing, food and clothing. Specially-trained Disaster Mental Health volunteers will be available to help those affected deal with the emotional aspect of their disaster, and the families will meet with caseworkers in the coming days to work on a long-term recovery plan.
Downloading the free Red Cross Emergency App: The Red Cross Emergency App provides people with instant access to emergency alerts and life-saving information. Available for smart phones and tablets, it includes content on what to do before, during and after a variety of severe weather events. Users can customize more than 35 emergency weather alerts based on their location and where loved ones live.
