American Red Cross welcomes Emergency Services Director

We are thrilled to have someone of Kevin’s caliber and expertise lead Emergency Services for our region.

The American Red Cross is pleased to announce the hiring of Columbus Division of Fire Battalion Chief and Ohio Homeland Security Advisor Kevin Reardon as Emergency Services Director for the Central-Southeast Ohio Region. Reardon has served the City of Columbus for 32 years, beginning as a paramedic/firefighter and moving up through the ranks to his current position. He is also the Vice-Chair of Ohio’s Homeland Security Advisory Council and has consulted with Battelle Memorial Institute’s National Security Division on Emergency Management initiatives. Kevin holds two Master’s Degrees – one in Public Policy and Management from The Ohio State University and another in National Security Studies from American Military University in Manassas, Virginia, in addition to significant training in many forms of emergency preparedness.

“We are thrilled to have someone of Kevin’s caliber and expertise lead Emergency Services for our region of the American Red Cross,” said Matt Bertram, CEO of the Central-Southeast Region of the American Red Cross. “The Red Cross is known for delivering world-class disaster relief and recovery services, and Kevin’s experience and training in many areas of preparedness will help us be ready for whatever our neighborhoods may face.”

Reardon takes over from Interim Regional Emergency Services Director Jeff McElroy, who’ll remain an integral part of the department. McElroy led the Red Cross’s preparedness efforts for anticipated severe storms in June, the disaster response to flooding in early July, the heat wave that followed less than two weeks later, and the approximately 60 to 65 single- or multi-family fires that occur across the region monthly, on average. His leadership of staff and volunteers during the months that he has held the Interim Director position ensured the high standards of service delivery for which the Red Cross is known.

“Jeff has done an amazing job of mobilizing volunteers and staff for a wide range of emergencies throughout the region during his management of the Department,” Bertram said. “Our focus is always on serving our clients and our communities, no matter what. Under Jeff’s leadership, our disaster response and preparedness has been exemplary, and we haven’t missed a beat.” McElroy, a former member of the Columbus Division of Police, joined the Red Cross five years ago.

Kevin Reardon will begin working with the American Red Cross on September 3, 2013. His position will be based in the Columbus Regional office at 995 East Broad Street, Columbus, Ohio 43205.
