A big thank you goes out to The Kroger Company for their support of the American Red Cross here in Central and Southeast Ohio. Kroger recently donated 14 pallets of bottled water for our disaster relief program - that’s more than 1,500 bottles! The water comes in very handy at disasters, not only for those impacted, but also to keep first responders hydrated, when necessary. We have strategically deployed the pallets throughout the region so that it is readily accessible and can be transported in the event of a major disaster.
To that end, our Disaster Action Team has almost depleted its supply of bottled water. At disaster sites, water is distributed by volunteers to affected individuals. Last fiscal year, throughout our 28 county region, the American Red Cross had 796 disaster operations and assisted 887 families affected by fires, floods, and other weather-related disasters. Since July 1't, there have been 144 disaster operations and 152 families have received assistance. Being able to supply water is critical to our mission of assisting families facing individual calamities as well as opening shelters, providing respite care centers, or operating cooling stations during larger scale disasters like the derecho.
Our Logistics Initial Response Vehicle (we call it the “LIRV”) was loaded to distribute some of it recently, so staff and volunteers posed for a quick photo to say thanks.
