As the fall season quickly approaches, local students in Armstrong County will begin their back-to-school preparations. The local American Red Cross, committed to assisting military members and their loved ones, is working with local financial institutions to help ensure military children enter the classroom with the right school supplies.
This summer, the local Red Cross, in partnership with Farmers and Merchants Bank of Western PA, funded and packed 125 ‘back to school’ backpacks to benefit military children in Armstrong County.
“It is truly a privilege to play a role in the lives of these military families in Armstrong County,” said Donna Pacella, executive director of the local Red Cross. “This initiative is made possible only through the dedication of local volunteers and the overwhelming generosity of our partner, Farmers and Merchants Bank.”
Farmers and Merchants Bank brought together several local financial institutions, including Northwest Savings Bank, Next Tier Bank and Elderton State Bank, to assist in funding and carrying out the back-to-school initiative.
The backpacks aim to fully-equip elementary and middle school students with essential school supplies for the 2013-2014 academic year. On Monday, Aug. 19, six volunteers from the participating banks gathered to fill the backpacks with pocket calculators, pencils, pens, notebooks and glue sticks among other items. Each financial institution donated the items.
“Farmers & Merchants Bank is honored to partner with these three financial institutions to make the backpacks possible for the second consecutive year,” stated Natalie Cotherman, F&M Bank marketing specialist. “We’re grateful for the opportunity to provide these backpacks to the families of those who have served or continue to serve in our military.”
The backpacks were then delivered to the National Guard Armory in Ford City to be later distributed to Armstrong County military children. Many children throughout the county will receive these kits just in time for school.
