The American Red Cross of Central SC responded to a Thanksgiving night multi-unit apartment fire in Columbia at the Charbonneau Apartments on Stoneridge Drive. The Red Cross provided disaster relief assistance to the residents of eight units who were displaced by the fire. The Red Cross provided the affected families with comfort kits which included personal hygiene items, and funds for lodging along with referrals to local partnering agencies.
Because of trained disaster volunteers and financial assistance from the community, Red Cross has been able to help more than 4,300 individuals and 1,300 families affected by disasters in the Palmetto SC region since January 1. On average, the American Red Cross, Palmetto SC Region responds to a disaster every 6.5 hours. The Palmetto SC Region is made up of seven Red Cross chapters spanning 35-counties of South Carolina.
It takes an average $1,250 for The Red Cross to support a family of four impacted by fire. Currently the Red Cross Central SC Chapter has an ongoing initiative called “Fire Hurts. Red Cross Helps.” aimed at ensuring families impacted by fire have the Red Cross resources available to receive much-needed support. Anyone interested in donating to “Fire Hurts. Red Cross Helps.” can make a financial contribution to the American Red Cross by calling 540-1240. Donations may also be mailed to the American Red Cross Central SC Chapter at 2751 Bull Street, Columbia, SC 29201.
