The American Red Cross of Central South Carolina responded to a multi-unit apartment fire in Columbia this evening providing disaster relief assistance to seven families. The Red Cross provided the affected families with comfort kits which included personal hygiene items, and funds for lodging and food along with referrals to local partnering agencies.
Over the weekend the Red Cross Central SC Chapter staff responded to 13 fires in Richland, Lexington, Sumter, Kershaw and Newberry counties.
Because of trained disaster volunteers and financial assistance from the community, Red Cross has been able to help more than 4,000 individuals and 1,300 families affected by disasters in the Palmetto SC region since January 1. On average, the American Red Cross, Palmetto SC Region responds to a disaster every 6.5 hours. The Palmetto SC Region is made up of seven Red Cross chapters spanning 35-counties of South Carolina.
