Kick off 2014 by giving the gift of life for patients in need. One blood donation, just an hour of your time, can help save the lives of up to three people.
Winter weather and busy schedules can keep many donors away during this time of year, causing collections to suffer. However, the demand for blood remains constant. The Red Cross encourages people who are in good health to donate so that hospital patients have the blood they need to make a full recovery. Blood is needed to help treat a variety of patients including accident victims and individuals undergoing surgery and cancer treatment.
The Red Cross South Carolina Blood Services Region provides lifesaving blood to patients in 54 hospitals. Approximately 500 people need to give blood or platelets each week day to meet hospital demands. Blood can be safely donated every 56 days. Platelets can be given every seven days, up to 24 times a year.
How to Donate Blood: Simply call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit redcrossblood.org to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. Blood can be safely donated every 56 days. Platelets can be given every seven days, up to 24 times a year. Most healthy people who are 17 years of age (16 with parental consent) and weigh at least 110 pounds are eligible to donate blood to the Red Cross. Donors who are 18 years and younger must also meet specific height and weight requirements. A Red Cross blood donor card or driver’s license, or two other forms of identification, are required at check-in.
