The Red Cross Rescue Racers, the official charity training team for the Myrtle Beach Marathon, will begin a 17-week training program on Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2014, to prepare participants for the Feb. 14, 2015, Myrtle Beach race.
The training program, sponsored by Gordon Biersch of Myrtle Beach and presented by O’Donovan Travel, WebsterRogers CPAs, and Inlet Anesthesia Consultants, is designed to help individuals train with qualified coaches to run, run/walk, or walk, the full (26.2 mile) or half (13.1 mile) marathon.
Anyone interested in knowing more about the program is invited to attend one of two public information meetings scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, and Thursday, Oct. 16, at the American Red Cross, Coastal South Carolina chapter house, 3531 Pampas Dr., Myrtle Beach, SC.
The training program was developed in 2007 as a partnership between the Red Cross chapter and the marathon board of directors. Since the team program’s inception, more than $350,000 in donations has been raised for Red Cross disaster services.
A professional head coach and coaching assistants provide individuals desiring to run, run/walk, or walk the marathon or half-marathon with personalized training schedules that include bi-weekly speakers on educational topics and a weekly group run/walk. Among the numerous benefits, team members receive a guaranteed spot in this popular race, team apparel, a sponsored pre-race pasta party, a private duffle shuttle on race morning, and a private massage tent at the finish line. The team concept provides the motivation to help participants reach their individual goals.
In return, team members commit to raising a minimum of $500 to support the humanitarian mission of the American Red Cross. By “training with a purpose” they reach personal goals while simultaneously providing a community service.
Returning sponsors for this year’s team training program, in addition to those named above, are WPDE News Channel 15, Gator 107.9 Radio, and Angelo’s Steak & Pasta.
