The American Red Cross, in partnership with the Clinton Department of Public Safety and the Greenville City Fire Department, will be conducting three Fire Safety Smoke Alarm Blitzes on Saturday, January 17. Using a door-to-door canvassing approach, volunteers will install smoke alarms and provide safety information to residents.
“Installing smoke alarms cuts the risk of someone dying from a home fire in half, so we’re joining with fire departments from across our community to install smoke alarms,” said Tony Reid, regional disaster officer, American Red Cross Palmetto SC Region. “We also will be teaching people how to be safe from home fires.”
This Blitz is a continuation of Nationwide Fire Safety Campaign launched by the American Red Cross in October 2014. The goal of the campaign is to reduce deaths and injuries from home fires by as much as 25 percent over the next five years.
Since the campaign launched last year, teams of Red Cross volunteers and fire officials have installed 1,727 smoke alarms and provided fire safety information in neighborhoods across South Carolina.
The Red Cross also is asking every household in America to take the two simple steps that can save lives: checking their existing smoke alarms and practicing fire drills at home.
In South Carolina, the American Red Cross, on average, responds to a disaster every four hours. Because of volunteers and financial assistance from the community, the Red Cross was able to help over 7,000 individuals affected by disasters, the majority of those being home fires, in S.C. last year.
