Red Cross Honors Local Heroes

2014 Black Hills Chapter Heroes

On March 13th, the Black Hills Area Chapter honored eight local heroes who made a personal commitment to creating safer and stronger communities and providing help during emergencies and disasters.

The 2014 Breakfast of Champions Heroes include:

LAW ENFORCEMENT: Officer Garrett Loen - Rapid City Police Officer Loen’s quick response to a cardiac arrest call and clear thinking while using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) helped save a life.

WINTER STORM ATLAS: Rory Maynard - In the midst of the storm, Rory Maynard opened the doors of the Day’s Inn in Lead to make sure his neighbors had a safe and comfortable place to wait out the blizzard and power outages.

WINTER STORM ATLAS: Janell & Steve Agan - When contacted by local officials during the storm, Registered Nurse Janell Agan quickly volunteered to care for shelter residents with medical needs while her husband, Pastor Steve Agan provided emotional and operational support until the shelter residents could return home.

MILITARY: MSgt Alison & MSgt Chuck Bridges - Although many walked away after watching a paraglider lose control and crash onto a rocky ledge, the Bridges and their two children sprang to action; rescuing the victim, treating his injuries and making sure he received medical treatment.

FIRST RESPONDER: Casey Tippmann - As a 10 year Search & Rescue volunteer, Casey has always contributed to the community. When he saw smoke coming from a home, he roused the sleeping resident and assisted her in fleeing to safety. His quick thinking saved the resident and her three dogs.

GOOD SAMARITAN: Jim Goodrich - On September 30, 2013 Jim witnessed a car accident involving a vehicle that had rolled down an embankment. With the car on fire, a group of locals stabilized the vehicle while Jim helped extract the young man and carry him to safety. He later learned the victim was his best friend’s grandson.
