We’re thrilled to be able to reach pet owners & let them know that there is help and hope available.

Dallas-Fort Worth, TX – January 14, 2015 – In an exciting new partnership, area non-profit organization Don’t Forget to Feed Me has teamed up with the American Red Cross to support pets following disasters.

It’s estimated that 62 percent of American families have a dog or cat, and when disasters strike, pet owners want to know that their furry friends will be cared for, too. Don’t Forget to Feed Me will ensure that dogs and cats displaced by emergencies like local home fires will have a “Pet Comfort Kit.” Items inside the kit include a retractable food dish, pet food, leash, squeaky toy and other fun treats.

On Friday, January 16, 2015 at 10:00a.m., Don’t Forget to Feed Me will deliver 500 kits to the American Red Cross, 1515 S. Sylvania Avenue, Fort Worth, where they’ll be placed on disaster relief trucks. When Red Cross workers respond to a home fire that also includes pets, volunteers will provide a Pet Comfort Kit to the owner. Last year, the American Red Cross responded to 920 home fires in the Metroplex alone.

“Thanks to our supporters, Don’t Forget to Feed Me is able to provide these pet comfort kits to our neighbors in need through the American Red Cross,” said Leigh Atkinson, board president, Don’t Forget to Feed Me. “We’re thrilled to be able to reach out to pet owners across North Texas and let them know that there is help and hope available. We look forward to working with the Red Cross to help pet owners in disaster situations for years to come."

The Red Cross believes the partnership is of critical importance. “When we respond to home fires, which is typically several times a day in the Metroplex, we want to do everything possible for the family, including helping them with their pets,” said T.D. Smyers, chief executive officer, American Red Cross North Texas Region. "This partnership allows our teams to provide an important resource for pets right on the curb of the fire.”

The Maverick Fund, named after the beloved pet of Joe and Patti Chiaramonte, is the arm of Don’t Forget to Feed Me that will providing ongoing support for the partnership.

“Our dog, Maverick, was such an important part of our lives. When we lost him, we knew we wanted to honor him in a special way. We are longtime supporters and volunteers with Don’t Forget to Feed Me so we established the Maverick Fund specifically to assist pet owners in crisis situations. Working with such an iconic organization like the Red Cross lets us know that these Pet Comfort Kits provided by the Maverick Fund are reaching pet owners who need it most."
