"There is great responsibility in caring for children," said John Davis, Red Cross Lamar County.

Wednesday, MAY 15, 2014 — Every parent needs a night off once in a while.  Thanks to American Red Cross Lamar County, parents can have greater peace of mind knowing their child is in the hands of a Red Cross trained babysitter.

The local chapter is offering a free babysitter training course on Saturday, May 31, 2014, from 9am – 4pm at the 2673 N. Main, Suite J location.  Registration deadline is Friday, May 23 and those interested should register online at or by calling the training support center at 1-800-733-2767.  Registrants must use coupon code: PREPAREPARIS1214.

The classroom course geared toward ages 11-15 provides the knowledge and hands-on skills necessary to safely and responsibly care for children and infants.  Not only will participants learn traditional skills such as basic first aid, diapering, feeding, age-appropriate supervision and reacting to an emergency or sudden illness; but also, leadership skills, guidance on developing a babysitting business, interviewing potential clients and how much to charge.  The course is about 6 hours in length and successful completion provides participants with a Babysitter’s Training Certification.  Attendees should bring a sack lunch.

Normally an $85 expense, the course is being offered free with generous support of The Paris Legacy Foundation, St. Joseph’s Community Foundation and Wells Fargo Advisors as part of “Be Prepared Paris”, an initiative by the Lamar County Red Cross to increase our local emergency preparedness.

“Babysitting is a great option for a young person’s first job, especially with the summer break approaching,” said John Davis, Executive Director of Red Cross Lamar County. “However, there is great responsibility in caring for other’s children.  With this course, new or even seasoned babysitters can equip themselves with the tools and training to provide an enjoyable and safe experience for their clients.”
