Red Cross volunteers respond to early morning fire, provide support

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ... (Rutland, VT – October 27, 2014)  In the early hours of this morning, fire struck an abandoned building located at 13 Pine Street in Rutland, VT.  Soon, flames encroached upon neighboring homes, forcing the residents to take to the streets for safety.  A situation that presented potential devastation for those occupying the homes on the adjacent lots has now largely resolved, with most having returned to their homes.

With the fire quickly consuming, and ultimately destroying, the property at 13 Pine Street, the Rutland City Police reached out to the Red Cross at about 4:00 a.m. to request the assistance of volunteers with the organization’s Rutland Disaster Action Team.  A team of trained volunteers assembled and quickly responded to the scene.

Homes on either side of the abandoned structure were impacted by the fire, with the focus of the damage to 11 Pine Street being largely contained to a rear porch and 15 Pine Street seeing parts of the siding charred by flames.  Power to both buildings was initially cut, with power now having been returned to the homes.  15 Pine Street was occupied by three families and 11 Pine by a single gentleman.  Until an inspection can be done by a qualified electrician, the resident of 11 Pine Street will be with family.  All other residents of the affected homes have returned to their residences.

Volunteers, having been on scene for the better part of four hours, have just recently cleared the scene.  In addition to confirming that the emergency needs of impacted residents were met, the responding team of volunteers also established a canteen with beverages and snacks made available for the members of the multiple fire departments that worked the fire, along with other first responders, a Rutland public works crew and Green Mountain Power employees.
