Goal: Mobilize 29,000 Volunteers in 100 Cities and Install 100,000 Free Smoke Alarms
TAMPA, FLORIDA – APRIL 10, 2018 – The American Red Cross is holding a series of Sound the Alarm events across Central Florida this spring, part of the nationwide Red Cross effort to help reduce the number of deaths and injuries caused by home fires.
The Red Cross is seeking individuals and groups to volunteer their time to help canvass more than a dozen local high-risk neighborhoods to install free smoke alarms and help families create home fire escape plans. Nationwide, Sound the Alarm events will occur from April 28 through May 13 in 100 cities. Central Florida is launching its campaign one week early, with a bonus event on April 21.
CENTRAL FLORIDA EVENTS:
The Red Cross responds to nearly 64,000 disasters a year, the majority of which are home fires. Working smoke alarms in a home cut the risk of death by half, and having an escape plan further improves the odds of survival. The Red Cross launched the Home Fire Campaign in 2014 to end these tragedies and save lives.
Across the country, the Campaign is making a difference. To date, the Red Cross and partners have saved at least 381 lives, installed 1,173,150 free smoke alarms and made 487,210 families safer.
Help us Sound the Alarm by volunteering to install smoke alarms, making a financial contribution, or taking steps to protect your own family from home fires. Visit SoundTheAlarm.org/CentralFlorida.
The Central Florida Region of the American Red Cross serves 19 counties through five chapters: Florida’s Space Coast (Daytona Beach), Greater Orlando, Mid-Florida (Winter Haven), Southwest Florida (Sarasota) and Tampa Bay.
