Lakewood, CO Sunday, June 25, 2017 – The American Red Cross continues to support the 88 people displaced by a roof collapse that happened on Sunday, June 18, at Maplewood Village Apartment Complex.
Working with the apartment complex property owner, Red Cross helped secure short term accommodations with a local motel from June 19 – June 26.. Red Cross and partner agencies are working together to provide meals and snacks each day while the families are sheltering at the motel. Additionally, Red Cross has provided direct financial assistance to help each of the families and individuals as they move towards recovery from this disaster. In situations, such as these the Red Cross typically provides support for the immediate needs of those displaced such as emotional and medical support, food, and clothing.
Red Cross continues to be in contact with the property owner and City of Lakewood, standing ready to once again open a short-term shelter; Monday, June 26 - Friday, June 30. The property owner of Maplewood Village had provided the motel rooms through Monday morning while working diligently with contractors and city officials to determine next steps for the tenants of each of the two buildings. There is reason to believe several families may still need our support on Monday.
In addition to preparing to provide shelter, Red Cross has facilitated a Multi-Agency Resource Center for those who still need help with resources for their recovery plan. On Tuesday, June 27, Community Organizations Active in Disaster members and partners from the city and county will be available to help provide resources for things like permanent housing, food, clothes and household furnishings to help replace what was lost.
*Due to the targeted nature of this disaster, the location of this event is not disclosed in this release as it will be provided through direct contact to the residents who were impacted and will not be open to the public.
