Red Cross offering free smoke alarm installations as part of the Sound the Alarm. Save a Life. Campaign.
The American Red Cross in Connecticut, Cigna Corporation, and the Hartford Fire Department are joining together to offer free smoke alarms installations to residents in Hartford on Tuesday, September 11 from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.
This Sound the Alarm. Save a Life. smoke alarm installation event is part of the Red Cross Home Fire Campaign to reduce the number of home fire deaths and injuries and the Red Cross is hoping to install 500 free smoke alarms as part of this event.
“Home fires are the biggest disaster threat we face, killing seven people in this country every day,” said Mario Bruno, CEO, American Red Cross, Connecticut and Rhode Island Region. “Here in Connecticut we responded to 750 home fires last year. Please help us Sound the Alarm by volunteering to install smoke alarms in your community, making a financial contribution, or taking steps to protect your own family from home fires.”
Residents can schedule a visit by visiting http://www.redcross.org/local/connecticut/home-fire-safety-visit or by calling 877-287-3327 and choosing option 1 on the menu to request a smoke alarm installation.
Red Cross volunteers will be joined by Cigna employees and members of the Hartford Fire Department to visit homes between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. on September 11. Teams making visits will share fire safety and preparedness information and install smoke alarms in homes as requested. Volunteers will help families understand the importance of fire safety and help them develop personalized family escape plans to use in the event a fire breaks out in their home.
In addition to providing free smoke alarm installations and education, the Red Cross is also looking for volunteers to help install smoke alarms for this event and in their community throughout the year. Home Fire Campaign Volunteers are trained by the Red Cross, can volunteer during the day or on weekends and can help make a difference in their community.

Every day, seven people die in home fires, most in homes that lack working smoke alarms. Sadly, children and the elderly disproportionately lose their lives. The American Red Cross wants to improve the odds and save lives- that’s why we launched our Home Fire Campaign in 2014. As of August 2018, the Red Cross and partners have saved more than 450 lives as part of this campaign, including two right here in Connecticut.
A critical part of the Home Fire Campaign is our Sound the Alarm home fire safety and smoke alarm installation events across the country. Together with fire departments and other community partners, Red Cross volunteers:
In just three years, our home visits have accomplished so much, including the installation of more than 1 million smoke alarms and preparing more than 1 million people against home fires.
