The American Red Cross proudly honored seven everyday heroes during the Greater Orlando Salute to Heroes Breakfast on May 16. These men, women, and service animals are silent heroes in our communities who embody the humanitarian spirit and selfless voluntary service of the global Red Cross movement.
“We’re grateful to the Greater Orlando Board of Directors, our sponsors, and everyone who helped bring this meaningful event to life,” said Janice Moran, Executive Director of the Greater Orlando Chapter of the American Red Cross. “Here’s to continuing the mission and lifting up everyday heroes among us.”
Each one of these ordinary individuals left an unforgettable impact. Their selflessness, compassion, and courage remind us that each and every one of us can be a hero. Meet the 2025 honorees:
Good Samaritan Award – Saving a life using lifesaving CPR
Chris Riha, a coach at OrangeTheory Fitness, got her CPR certification hoping she would never have to use it. However, on the morning of March 28th, when a class member fell unconscious, Coach Chris sprang into action, clearing the studio and beginning CPR until emergency services arrived. The studio member later shared that she only had a 12% chance of surviving that emergency outside of a hospital. Coach Chris’s quick thinking saved her life.
Medical Hero Award – Bringing joy to Pediatric Patients
Trish Polito has spent the past 12 years working as a child life specialist, providing support and education to pediatric hospital patients and their families. During that time, she has gone above and beyond to bring joy to scared and anxious people. From putting on a dinosaur costume to make kids laugh to helping teenagers play pranks on their nurses, Trish brings laughter and light into all her patients’ lives.
Educational Services – Extraordinary Support for Students
Sydney Moran, PhD, RN, CPN is a member of the Nursing Faculty at AdventHealth University. Dr. Moran embodies generosity and compassion, welcoming all campaigns and drives with open arms and contributing in any way she can. She also sets an example for her students, encouraging them to give back. Her generous spirit and dedication to her community have helped provide for so many people.
Animal Hero – Bringing Comfort to Hundreds of Children
Service dog Jordan and her handler Denise Conus work at Kids House of Seminole, a nonprofit dedicated to helping victims of child abuse. Jordan has spent over eight years providing comfort to children going through therapy, medical exams, interviews and more. Her unconditional love has helped over one thousand children feel safe, possibly for the first time.
Good Samaritan Award – Exceptional Community Impact, Volunteerism and Leadership
Alan Hirschkorn spends his time selflessly helping the senior citizens of the Gulf Stream Harbor community. He has organized many food drives and personally supervises food distributions. Alan also set up a neighborhood watch program for residents, and spends time volunteering at various community events, proving to be a vital part of the community.
First Responder Awards – Acts of Bravery and Leadership
On the morning of Nov. 27, 2024 Orange County Corrections Officers Terry Meyer and Victor Rodriguez were headed downtown when they saw a serious accident involving four vehicles – one of which was an RV. They immediately pulled over, redirecting traffic and calling for help. Officer Meyer pulled two young children out of a vehicle to safety. Their quick actions and bravery ensured that the accident victims were able to get the help they needed.
American Red Cross National Lifesaving Award
During the early morning hours of January 15, an elderly man drove his car into a pond after experiencing a medical emergency. Nathaniel Camacho, a Lifeguard working nearby rushed over to help. He flagged down a nearby police officer and dove in to pull the man out of the car, saving his life.
