Members of the Red Cross Angels, a volunteer auxiliary to the Tampa Bay Chapter of the American Red Cross, gathered recently to celebrate their 2024-25-year successes and install their 2025-26-year leadership.
The annual Installation Luncheon at the Tampa Yacht Club also included the presentation of the Angel of the Year and a “history” lesson from Mike Brown, Executive Director of the Tampa Bay Chapter, who installed the new officers.
The new officers are Leslie Jennewein, president; Barbara Davis, vice-president; Sharon Danaher, recording secretary; Nancy Watkins, corresponding secretary; and Glenda Barlow, treasurer.
Jennewein said her goals include raising awareness of the American Red Cross, growing the Angels membership, providing more volunteer opportunities, and having the Angels Silver Coffee as a fundraiser. “Through your work, you will somehow affect the lives of others,” she said.
Brown spoke about the Red Cross's assistance in wars, including World War II, where nationwide blood drives resulted in 13.4 million pints of blood collected. “The Red Cross network is always there in a time of need. It is there when help cannot wait,” he said.
Brown praised the Angels, founded in 1981, saying, “It is an honor to work with you all year. You are more than a group of volunteers.”
Outgoing president Joan Rhyne thanked the organization’s members for their work and support of her as president. “You all have been so amazing to me,” Rhyne said, as Jennewein surprised her with a gift of two crystal angels and flowers.
Rhyne also announced Judie Thomas as the Angel of the Year for her leadership and participation in various committees and projects. “She is a very quiet worker,” Rhyne said.
The luncheon was arranged by Lavinia Kelly, chairwoman, Esther Hammer, and Judy Thomas.
