As a cancer survivor, Nashville resident Savannah Speer shares that, “people donating blood definitely saved my life.”
Diagnosed with Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS) in August 2023, Savannah says that she began an intensive course of treatment that included weekly blood transfusions and ultimately a stem cell transplant in May 2024. By August 8, 2024, she was declared cancer-free - a milestone she credits to medical advances and community resources.
Savannah says she became familiar with the American Red Cross during the Nashville tornado on December 9, 2023, when the organization provided critical support to community members, distributing food and water while helping with cleanup efforts. According to Savannah, many residents like her father and stepmother were even able to receive some financial assistance from the Red Cross and other community organizations. She shares that this firsthand experience of community support was particularly impactful.
“Even through all the destruction and chaos, it was beautiful to see a community come together,” Savannah states, highlighting how important community support is in times of crisis.
While the Nashville tornado was her first direct contact with the organization, she shares her experience with the American Red Cross had in fact begun months earlier. The blood transfusions she received throughout her cancer battle could only happen because of blood donations made to the organization by people willing to stand up for patients like her in need. Because of these contributions, her journey underscores the massive impact blood donations have on many Americans every day.
Blood transfusions are a vital source of healing and hope for patients like Savannah, who are battling cancer, and for those injured in accidents or during severe weather events. Unfortunately, these emergencies can strain hospital resources, leading to critical blood shortages. By coming together as a community, we can help ensure that lifesaving blood is available when it's needed most.
