The International Response Fund and the Tsunami Disaster Response

Reuters/Yusuf Ahmad, courtesy of www.alertnet.org.

On Sunday, Dec. 26, 2004, the largest earthquake to strike the globe since 1964 rocked the ocean floor off the coast of Indonesia . The 9.0-magnitude quake triggered extremely large tsunami waves that brought massive flooding, swept away entire coastal villages, and took tens of thousands of lives with little or no warning throughout Southern Asia and coastal regions as far as Eastern Africa. The giant waves also have left a staggering number of people injured or displaced--tens of thousands are missing and hundreds of thousands homeless throughout more than a dozen countries.

Nations around the world rallied to support victims of this tragedy. Across the United States, large corporations donated millions in money and relief supplies, and in local communities, children opened lemonade stands, held bake sales, and gave whatever they could for relief efforts. Because of the amazing generosity of donors, the American Red Cross believes it has sufficient funds to cover the immediate emergency response and to carry out its longer-term plans to assist tsunami survivors.

While the American Red Cross continues to respond to the ongoing humanitarian needs in the tsunami-affected region, the focus of Red Cross efforts has shifted to long-term programs which help restore livelihoods and hope to the affected communities. The American Red Cross has transitioned from the emergency phase into the long-term recovery phase. For information about the Red Cross tsunami relief and recovery efforts and further details regarding the impact that generous donations are making in the lives of tsunami survivors around the world, please read the American Red Cross Tsunami Recovery Program One-Year Report.
