Sandra Ortega Garcia’s life is a testament to the power of service and impact one individual can have on an entire community. A lifelong volunteer, she has dedicated over 40 years to making a difference, whether through her work with the American Red Cross, her advocacy for victims in crisis, or her deep-rooted commitment to preserving the cultural and historical identity of San Luis and the San Luis Valley.
Born and raised in San Luis, Colorado, Sandra is a 10th-generation native whose family immigrated from Portugal and Spain. Growing up on Main Street in a close-knit, thriving community, Sandra was surrounded by the unconditional love and support of her family and neighbors, shaping her lifelong dedication to helping others. “Everybody helped everyone,” she recalls. “That shaped how I grew up.” Her father often spoke the phrase “Padre de los pobres,” emphasizing the importance of caring for those in need.
Through her family, Sandra cultivated a deep connection with her heritage and the Spanish language. She grew up with strong traditions, longevity in her family, and a sense of belonging that has remained with her throughout her life. This reinforced her commitment to preserving and celebrating her community’s history. One of the most meaningful and visible projects, Sandra embarked on with her husband, Antonio Garcia, was the construction of La Capilla de Todos los Santos (The Chapel of All Saints) in San Luis. With Antonio’s expertise in construction and their shared devotion to Catholicism, they built the chapel using local materials, leaving behind a lasting testament to their faith and heritage.
Beside her family, key mentors have influenced and guided Sandra throughout her life, inspiring both her work in crisis response and her contributions to the community. “Wherever you are, leave it better than how you found it,” she advises. “Work together as a team, share knowledge, and uplift each other.”
As a Victims Advocate with the Alamosa County Sheriff’s Office, she provides emotional and spiritual support to individuals facing trauma, whether in domestic violence situations, car accidents, or unexpected loss. Her role ensures that no one has to endure hardship alone. “Nobody should be left behind,” she says. “We’ve all got baggage, and I want to be there to help others carry it.”
In 2022, Sandra was honored as a Corn Mother through History Colorado, a recognition that symbolizes nurturing, resilience, and cultural preservation. The honor reaffirmed her lifelong mission of upholding the traditions and values of her community.
She was also the recipient of the prestigious Billy Adams Award from Adams State University, as an acknowledgment of her tireless work in education, advocacy, and service. When she received the award, she first thanked President David Tandberg, who recognized her efforts, and then honored her parents, who instilled in her the values of compassion and selflessness.
As a member of the Alamosa Chamber of Commerce, Sandra sees opportunities for businesses and organizations to collaborate for the greater good. She hopes that people will continue to come together, regardless of social status, to support one another.
Her advice to younger generations is simple but profound: “Go out and volunteer. Find mentors. Help the elderly and the young—bridge the gap between generations. Recognize the value of each individual.” At 72 years old, Sandra remains a “free-range senior citizen,” as she calls herself, living life with “Jesus glasses” on—seeing the good in people and striving to make the world a better place.
Sandra Ortega Garcia’s story is one of perseverance, humility, and an unwavering commitment to service. Through faith, compassion, and action, she has left an indelible mark on the San Luis Valley and continues to inspire all who know her.
