DURANGO, Colo. (Nov. 1, 2026) – The American Red Cross of Western Colorado has opened evacuation shelters across southwestern Colorado as floodwaters rise and roads become impassable. Shelters are open in the following locations:
Anyone unable to return home should visit a shelter for a safe and warm place to stay. Stay an hour, stay the night; we will be here as long as you need. The shelter also provides food, water, medical care and mental health support. These shelters are pet-friendly.
Red Cross shelters are open to everyone in need, regardless of race, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation or citizenship status, and all disaster assistance is free. We don’t require people to show any kind of identification to enter a shelter, just their name and where they have been living.
Rain and storms continue to be in the forecast in parts of Colorado today and tomorrow. Stay weather aware and ready for possible flooding: Check alerts, avoid flooded roads, and keep your go kit handy. Learn more by visiting www.redcross.org/flood.
