DENVER, Colo. (Dec. 16, 2025) — The American Red Cross of Colorado is urging residents to take steps now to prepare for wildfire as a period of high impact wind moves through the region and National Weather Service offices warn that very dry, windy conditions can elevate fire danger, including potential red flag warnings in some areas.
High winds can turn a small spark into a fast-moving wildfire, even in winter. The Red Cross is reminding everyone that wildfires can happen any time of year, as Coloradans saw during the Marshall Fire on Dec. 30, 2021, when extreme winds and very dry fuels helped fire spread rapidly.
"Strong winds are not just a travel hazard; they can dramatically increase wildfire risk," said Andrea Miller, regional chief executive officer of the Red Cross of Colorado and Wyoming. "A few simple steps today can make a big difference if conditions change quickly."

The Red Cross also encourages everyone to download the free Red Cross Emergency App to help monitor hazards and find safety information. You can find the Emergency App by searching "American Red Cross" in your app store or by visiting redcross.org/apps.
