Make an Appointment for a Home Fire Safety Visit in New Haven

The American Red Cross asks everyone to help Sound the Alarm in New Haven and be part of the nationwide Red Cross effort to help reduce the number of deaths and injuries caused by home fires.

Here in New Haven, Connecticut the Red Cross is holding a Sound the Alarm home fire safety and FREE smoke alarm installation event on Saturday, April 28 from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. The Red Cross is holding this event in coordination with the City of New Haven and local community partners. Red Cross volunteers and local partners will be canvassing neighborhoods, installing free smoke alarms, replacing batteries in existing alarms and helping families create escape plans. All residents are encouraged to make an appointment for a free home fire safety visit. Participating partners working with the Red Cross include local fire departments, municipalities, community and faith-based organizations.

The Sound the Alarm home fire safety and smoke alarm installation event in Connecticut is made possible through the generous support of companies like Lifesaving Partner Kidde and Resiliency Partner Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation.

In fact, home fires are the biggest disaster threat our community faces, killing seven people in this country every day,” said Mario Bruno, CEO, American Red Cross Connecticut and Rhode Island Region. “Please help us Sound the Alarm by volunteering to install smoke alarms in your community, making a financial contribution, or taking steps to protect your own family from home fires.”

“I particularly appreciate the collaboration between city staff, American Red Cross volunteers and staff, and so many community partners who have stepped up to assist in this worthwhile effort,” said Mayor Toni Harp.  “This is a great program that offers free smoke alarms and home safety education – I encourage all New Haven residents to take full advantage of the Sound the Alarm Program.”

The Red Cross responds to nearly 64,000 disasters a year, the majority of which are home fires. Working smoke alarms in a home cut the risk of death by half, and having an escape plan further improves the odds of survival. The Red Cross wants to end these tragedies and save lives, the reason why the organization launched the Home Fire Campaign in 2014.

Across the country, the Campaign is making a difference. As of March 2018, the Red Cross and our partners across the country have saved more than 380 lives and installed more than one million free smoke alarms.
