Connectivity after a disaster like Hurricane Helene can be a lifeline. In areas without power, internet or cell phone service, communication is difficult, if not impossible. We work with partners like MOVE Community Outreach, an IEEE-USA initiative, to deploy vehicles and volunteers capable of providing mobile power and communication services.
Helene left devastation across the Southeast. Trained Red Cross disaster workers from Florida are not only helping their own affected communities, but have also stepped up to help in other areas.
Tampa Red Cross volunteer Ira Arman flew into North Carolina to deploy a MOVE truck with Grayson Randall, a senior member of the MOVE volunteer crew. They were able to gain access to a Red Cross shelter in Fletcher, NC, near Asheville, with the help of a law enforcement escort in an area that was restricted due to landslides.
Upon arrival, the shelter has no power or cell phone service. Ira and Grayson set up a mobile command center using two satellite systems to establish internet access and reconnect the shelter workers and residents to the outside world.
Recently, power was restored to the shelter and other services are starting to become available, but are not yet consistent. The MOVE crew continues to deliver internet that allows disaster relief agencies and responders to communicate with one another and supply urgently needed services.
