SOUTH BEND, Ind., August 18, 2023 — The Executive Director for the Northwest Chapter of the Indiana Region Red Cross, Kristin Marlow, is deploying to Maui to assist with disaster relief efforts in the aftermath of devastating wildfires. Marlow is traveling on Monday, August 21 to join more than 300 volunteers, including two from Indiana who are already on the ground in Hawaii working to get help to people affected as quickly as possible.
During her deployment, Marlow will be working closely with community partners to ensure those impacted by these tragic wildfires are connected to available resources to help them in their recovery.
Since the fires began, the Red Cross and the county government have provided almost 5,000 overnight shelter stays in 14 emergency shelters on Maui and Oahu. Emergency shelters are serving as multi-purpose service centers where people can access hot meals, relief supplies, health, mental health and spiritual care services, support with finding loved ones and casework assistance.
Our work in Hawaii is just beginning. Recovering from a wildfire of this magnitude will take time and the full community coming together to support one another. The Red Cross was helping people before the fires started and will be there in the weeks and months to come, helping people recover from this tragedy.
