It’s really been a rough time for Crystal Kiely. First, a heavy lamp fell on her foot and broke it in several places three months ago, forcing her to move about in a wheelchair.
Then her St. Ann, Missouri home was damaged by flash flooding and her supply of the 13 medications she takes daily was lost. The special cast for her injured foot also was heavily damaged.
“The foundation cracked, the ceiling cracked, and water was everywhere,” she said. “The whole street was under water.”
But Crystal never thought about giving up in the face of such adversity.
“I’ve got two kids, one who’s 2 and the other who’s 3,” she said. “I’ve got to be there for them.”
She decided to come to the Multi-Agency Resource Center, MARC, where flood victims can meet with various organizations and government agencies providing recovery for flood victims.
Red Cross health care volunteer Richard Doornink explained how the Red Cross could help guide her through what she needed to do to replace the lost medications and her damaged cast, and provide financial assistance if necessary.
For Crystal, it made her day a little bit brighter.
“I really didn’t expect to get any help and I wasn’t sure what I was going to do,” she said. “I’m so happy now.”
