The American Red Cross New Jersey Region offered home fire safety information and tips for parents to help keep children safe this Halloween during Trunk or Treat, an annual event held in the parking lot at the Red Cross Tinton Falls location. Creative trunk displays by Red Crossers and community partners, along with preparedness activities for children helped make the event enjoyable as well as educational.
In addition to treats and fun activities, more than 170 children had the opportunity to meet Pedro the Penguin, the lovable penguin featured in the free Prepare with Pedro video series that helps educate young children about disasters. Pedro and other important safety and preparedness information can be found on redcross.org/PrepareNJ.
HALLOWEEN SAFETY
On October 31, children dressed as ghosts, witches, superheroes and cartoon characters will be out in neighborhoods for trick or treat fun. The Red Cross has 10 tips parents can follow to help keep children safe while enjoying Halloween festivities.
1. Trick-or-treaters need to see and be seen.
2. Use flame-resistant costumes.
3. Make sure adults know where the children are going.
4. A parent or responsible adult should accompany young children door-to-door.
5. Be cautious around animals, especially dogs.
6. Walk, don’t run.
7. Only visit homes that have a porch light on. Accept treats at the door – never go inside.
8. Walk only on the sidewalks, not in the street.
9. A grown-up should check the treats before children eat them.
10. If you are planning to welcome trick-or-treaters to your home, follow these safety steps:
