When an aspiring nursing student learned about an opportunity to host an American Red Cross blood drive, she could not resist the chance to help future patients who may need lifesaving blood.
Makayla Boles, a senior at South Stokes High School in Walnut Cove, North Carolina, knew that helping people is central to her chosen profession.
“It sounded like a good opportunity and went along with my career choice,” Makayla said of the American Red Cross Leaders Save Lives Scholarship Program, which helps high school and college students organize and host blood drives.
Makayla, who received CPR and first aid certification through the Red Cross, said the experience not only helped others but also strengthened her empathy, compassion and promotional skills.
In addition to the impact of hosting the drive, Makayla was entered into a drawing for a scholarship and was surprised when her name was selected.
“I was shocked. I never thought it could be me,” she said.
Regardless of the chance of receiving a scholarship, Makayla encourages others to consider hosting a Leaders Save Lives blood drive.
“Do it because at the end of the day you’re helping somebody else,” she said.
She added advice for those who take on the challenge: “Not everyone can donate or is willing, so be grateful for who shows up.”
