Eddie and Darlene built a life together in Avery County, surrounded by the quiet beauty of the mountains. When Hurricane Helene moved through the area, that sense of home was suddenly interrupted.
Dozens of trees crashed onto their house, trapping them inside. Every exit was blocked by fallen debris. With no way out, Eddie and Darlene made their way to the porch—the only space left—and waited as the storm continued around them.
Neighbors feared the worst. The damage was so severe that many believed the couple had not survived.
Hours later, a neighbor arrived with an excavator and began clearing a path through the debris. When they finally reached the home, Eddie and Darlene were found alive.
That moment marked the beginning of a long recovery—one made possible by a community coming together.
This month, Eddie and Darlene received the keys to a newly rebuilt home through Appalachian Service Project, supported by the American Red Cross and other partners. The home reflects not only skilled craftsmanship, but also the care and commitment of the many people who stepped forward to help.
From the Avery County Long Term Recovery Group to the United Methodist Committee on Relief and the Grandfather Community Foundation—along with neighbors who acted in a moment of crisis—this effort shows what’s possible when people support one another.
“All the people were very special people,” Eddie said. “All the groups that came to our aid were tremendous people, tremendous help. You can’t put it into words … to have people show up that say they were here to help was unbelievable.”
Today, Eddie and Darlene are home again—moving forward with gratitude and a renewed sense of what community can mean in the hardest moments.
