Marsha Kitter has been a Red Cross volunteer for more than 50 years, just one of four in North Carolina. She currently is a training services, a blood donor ambassador, and a disaster volunteer for the Red Cross Cape Fear Chapter. She also teaches the Red Cross babysitting course.
“I started volunteering in November of 1973. I was a junior in college,” Marsha said.
She is one of five volunteer CPR instructors in the entire organization.
“I was working at a summer camp, and I wanted to be able to teach basic aid training, basic first aid training for elementary school children,” Marsha said. “I did that for a year and then I became a full-fledged CPR instructor.”
Martha explained though she is retired, she still wanted to make a difference in her community.
“It’s a valuable skill I can teach to people,” Martha said. “I have no idea if anyone has had to use the skills I've taught, but I want to train to make sure if anybody collapses, that there is a trained person nearby to help.”
“When you volunteer with the Red Cross—It makes a very big difference in people's lives.”
