A Story by Barbara Lorenzo, American Red Cross
“My journey to becoming a phlebotomist with the American Red Cross is a testament to resilience and the pursuit of dreams. I came to the United States from Venezuela four years ago, carrying with me a background in pre-med and a determination to build a new life.
The path wasn't easy. I spent my first years working in warehouses, navigating a new culture and language. English was a challenge – I arrived knowing only about 20%. But necessity, supportive friends, and my wonderful husband, who I met at work, helped me become fluent.
When my husband suggested applying to the Red Cross, it felt like a perfect opportunity to return to healthcare. The organization's commitment to training made it possible for me to become a phlebotomist, bridging my medical background with my new life in America.
As a Hispanic professional in healthcare, I've faced challenges, like occasionally struggling with thick accents. But working with the Red Cross has been incredibly rewarding. It's a beautiful company filled with people who genuinely want to make a difference.
My Hispanic heritage has profoundly shaped my journey. We Hispanics are tough – there's not a Hispanic country that hasn't faced political problems. The women in our families are particularly strong. This resilience has helped me overcome the obstacles of moving to a new country at 19 and supporting my family back home.
Now, as I balance my work at the Red Cross with studying biology, I'm grateful for the opportunities I've found here. To other Hispanics considering donating blood, I'd say this: You're needed more than you know. Your donation can make a crucial difference, especially for people with conditions like sickle cell disease who benefit most from blood donated by people of similar ethnic backgrounds.
Every day, I'm proud to put my heart into helping others through my work at the American Red Cross.”
