As we celebrate Military Appreciation Month, we honor not only those who wear the uniform but also those who go above and beyond in service to others. One such individual is SGT Adams Guerrero, a Senior Medic for Coldsteel Company, 1-327, 1st Brigade of the 101st Airborne Division as well as an active American Red Cross disaster-trained volunteer whose commitment to service spans beyond local communities and causes.
Adams has volunteered with the American Red Cross for over two years, supporting the Tennessee River chapter in disaster relief operations—most recently the April 2025 floods in Clarksville—and day-to-day efforts, such as inspecting and preparing Red Cross nurse kits in preparation for use during disasters.
During his time with the American Red Cross, Adams was nominated for and received the Presidential Volunteer Service Award – Gold Level of Recognition – for logging more than 500 hours of volunteer service hours in just seven to eight months. That same year, he earned the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, a recognition that reflects his deep commitment both in and out of uniform.
While deployed to Poland back in 2023 for Operation European Assure, Deter and Reinforce in Poland he demonstrated initiative and leadership by establishing a bike club for fellow soldiers during their downtime. This not only promoted physical fitness through regular rides of at least 20 miles, but also fostered camaraderie, morale and mental resilience. His efforts provided a constructive outlet and encouraged team bonding.
Balancing a demanding military career while dedicating time to volunteer is no small task, yet Adams manages to do both. He also makes time for personal passions that help him stay grounded. In his free time, he enjoys biking, photography and tasting/rating coffee — activities that offer a sense of calm and renewal amid the steady pace of military life.
When asked what advice he would give someone considering a military career, Adams said, “Don’t be so quick to rush to the top. Enjoy the journey while you have it. Life is too short to cut your story short.” With a long-standing passion for healthcare and helping others, Adams plans to become a Physician Assistant through the Army’s Interservice Physician Assistant Program (IPAP), where he can continue serving both individuals and communities with the same sense of purpose that has driven his military and volunteer experiences.
This Military Appreciation Month, we salute Adams — a shining example of selfless service who continues to inspire others.
