For two decades, Mary Lockett has been a shining example of what it means to serve with compassion and resilience. Currently a Community Engagement and Partnerships Lead for the Tennessee River Chapter of the American Red Cross, her journey with the organization began in 2005 during one of the nation’s most devastating disasters – Hurricane Katrina. As a nurse, Mary felt called to help and deployed as a Government Operations volunteer, supporting families in New Orleans during this crisis.
Mary’s commitment to service runs deep. As a military spouse, she spent years traveling internationally, including to Korea, where she spoke with other spouses about the challenges of military life and adjusting to new environments. That experience shaped her understanding of community and connection, both values she continues to bring to her Red Cross work.
Over the years, Mary has worn many hats: shelter volunteer, nurse, government operations responder, feeding team member, and is now a leader in community partnerships. She has answered the call to support numerous disaster relief operations, bringing comfort and stability to communities in crisis. Each role has strengthened her belief in preparedness, especially for her own family.
Mary recalls one deployment that left a lasting impact. It was the response to the tornadoes in Rolling Fork, Mississippi that further shaped her thoughts on the importance of communities and partnerships. “It was a very difficult response because of the loss of lives,” she says, “but seeing so many other partner organizations come together to help that small town was the blessing.” For Mary, every deployment is unique, but the common thread is the power of collaboration and compassion.
Respected across the American Red Cross network and beyond, Mary’s dedication has touched countless lives. Her story is a testament to the difference one person can make when they lead with heart and a willingness to serve.
“We’re here to help people in need,” said Mary. “The Red Cross is not just some company or non-profit. It’s a family.”
