In El Paso, Texas, a small group of dedicated volunteers came together to install smoke alarms in the homes of families facing one of life’s most difficult challenges, a child with cancer. Seven American Red Cross volunteers spent the day making the families’ homes safer. They were joined by members of the Candlelighters, a nonprofit organization that supports children with cancer, plus two Texas Tech students.
The team of volunteers visited three different homes. They made sure each smoke alarm was properly placed, tested, and explained to the families. They also shared basic fire safety information. Having working smoke alarms significantly increases the chances of surviving a fire, because they provide early warning and valuable time to escape. For families already facing the stress of a child’s illness, this added layer of protection brings both safety and peace of mind.
Executive Director of the American Red Cross for the West Texas Chapter, Anna Apodaca says, "Families caring for a child with cancer already carry so much on their shoulders. Through this partnership with Candlelighters of El Paso, we're proud to stand alongside these incredible families."
One client was incredibly grateful when the Red Cross came knocking at her door to install smoke alarms in her home. As the sole caretaker for two individuals with disabilities, she shared that she had not had a working smoke alarm in years. When our team arrived, she was relieved to learn that the installation was free of charge.
Our volunteers installed the alarm and took time to sit with her, sharing important fire safety information. She expressed deep appreciation, especially knowing that the team was made up of volunteers. She mentioned that she learned so much from the visit and hadn’t received fire safety education since elementary school.
Beyond smoke alarm installations, Candlelighters play a vital role in the community by helping families navigate the emotional, educational, and practical challenges of pediatric cancer. From offering guidance and resources to fostering a strong sense of community, the organization ensures that families never face their journey alone.
This partnership began when Candlelighters CEO Melissa Wardy Atkins joined the board of the West Texas Chapter. Through this collaboration, the Red Cross committed to installing smoke alarms in the homes of families in need.
The partnership between Candlelighters and the American Red Cross continues to grow stronger through additional initiatives. These efforts go beyond safety measures; they reflect a shared commitment to community, compassion, and care. By combining resources and dedication, the Red Cross, Candlelighters, and their volunteers are helping create safer, more supportive environments for families facing extraordinary challenges.
