On January 28, just days after a severe winter storm swept through Central Texas, Red Cross volunteer, Juveline Handy became a lifeline for a mother facing extreme hardship. A woman arrived at our facility at Fort Hood with no phone, no shelter and five children including a one-year-old. She was seeking nothing more than help and hope as temperatures continue to plummet.
Juveline immediately recognized the gravity of the situation. As a mother herself, she understood on a deeply personal level the fear and desperation this woman was experiencing. That connection fueled her determination to help in every way that she could.
Despite the chaos brought on by the weather, Juveline acted with calm urgency. She immediately began calling every shelter in the area, only to hear the same heartbreaking answer, “We’re full.” Families across Central Texas were struggling, and resources were stretched thin. One by one, doors seemed to close but Juveline refused to give up.
Feeling devastated but determined, she expanded her reach. She contacted Dr. Nica Holland, founder of Fresh Fire Covenant Church International in Copperas Cove, Texas, for additional resources, called shelters from both her office and home, and used personal connections in the community to find any path that might lead this family to safety.
The situation became even more urgent when Juveline learned the family’s hotel stay would end that very day. With no money left, their only remaining option was to sleep in their van during one of the coldest snaps of the season. Still, Juveline persisted.
She gathered all of the mother’s information and was finally able to get in contact with Families in Crisis, the shelter that had been waiting for the mother to reconnect. Because the mother had no phone, Juveline took it upon herself to purchase a calling card, giving her a reliable way to stay connected to vital resources for weeks to come.
Thanks to Juveline’s dedication, the mother was able to obtain both housing and phone access. Juveline spoke to her with warmth, reassured her that she wasn’t alone, and stood by her through every step of this incredibly difficult journey. Her actions did more than link the family to critical support, they restored hope at a moment when it felt out of reach.
On February 17, at the American Red Cross facilities in Fort Hood, Juveline Handy was honored with the Compassionate Award, presented by Valerie Vetrone, Executive Director of the Heart of Texas Chapter. The recognition was a heartfelt surprise and a well‑deserved tribute to her extraordinary compassion and commitment.
“I was shocked because they gave it to me during a casual gathering. and it just felt like an ordinary day. I felt like I did something great for someone,” Juveline says.
The experience left Juveline with a message she hopes others will carry forward,
“It teaches me that when you have nothing in life and no one is there for you, they actually are. There are a lot of good people out there to offer assistance,” Juveline says.
Juveline’s kindness reminds us that compassion has its greatest power when it becomes personal. On that cold January day, she didn’t just help a family in need, she changed their lives and story.
