Floods. House fires. Tornadoes. Red Cross responds to all these to help those in need. This year alone, the Red Cross in North Mississippi has responded to 424 single- and multi-family fires and helped 1,554 families. Now they have an ERV of their own.

In the early hours of what would prove to be a challenging morning, a distress call reverberated through the community of Fairfield, Alabama. Harriett Smith, facing the daunting task of caring for her family after a fire and the Red Cross was there.

As disaster volunteers, Anne and Jim go out on calls to support people who have had fires or whose homes were affected by storms. This can includes emotional support, financial assistance and information to help families begin the process of recovery.

Reuben Ebanks is a true American hero. He has spent 27 years in the US Marine Corps and when wildfires ravaged Hawaii, he felt compelled to do more. He began his journey with the Red Cross delivering water and relief items to those who lost everything. 

The Red Cross is working with Tulane Missionary Baptist Church in Yazoo, Mississippi, to foster community resilience by helping to increase access to nutritious food.

One of the partners we’re working with in Alabama is House to House, a community development and revitalization organization that focuses on affordable housing. 

“We are so excited about this generous donation from the American Red Cross because transportation was a major challenge for us in getting food, menstrual products and other cleaning and hygiene supplies to families in Selma and the Mississippi Delta who lost their homes and jobs in the tornadoes of 2023,” said WIT president and CEO Adeyela Bennett.
