By Ellen Tuckett, American Red Cross
Some people quietly become heroes—one donation at a time. Andrea Carey of Pawcatuck, CT is one of them. Her lifelong dedication to giving blood has not only supported the American Red Cross but has helped save countless lives and uplifted entire communities.
A FIRST DONATION AT 19 Andrea Carey’s blood donation journey began at just 19, when she was a college student in New Hampshire. Over the decades she has given blood at least 136 times in CT and 26 in RI. When asked what inspired her, Andrea replied with characteristic humility:
“Why not? It only takes an hour of my time and helps save lives!”
That simple act sparked a powerful, lifelong habit of giving. Now, at 79, Andrea donates blood every 3 or 4 months—and recently reached an extraordinary milestone: over 20 gallons donated. Her story reminds us that consistent, small actions can add up to something life-changing.
Although Andrea has lived in several New England states—including Connecticut, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island—her commitment to donating blood has never wavered. When Andrea began, the Red Cross didn’t offer online donation tracking. Today, thanks to RedCrossBlood.org and the Red Cross Blood Donor App, donors can easily view their donation history, health screening results, and even track where their blood goes.
A PIN FOR EVERY PINT Andrea proudly wears the legacy of her donations—literally. A floppy hat adorned with Red Cross pins marks each milestone. Each pin isn’t just a token—it’s a story of hope, healing, and humanity.
Her collection sparks conversation and inspires action. She also wears her Red Cross shirts proudly, encouraging others to join the mission every time she steps out.
PINS WITH MEANING Some pins mean more than others. One of Andrea’s most treasured is from the day after 9/11—a time when the country was grieving and coming together. That pin, symbolizing unity in crisis, holds a special place on her hat and in her heart.
ADVOCACY IN ACTION Andrea is a quiet yet powerful advocate for blood donation. Inspired by her mother’s example, her daughter Amy started donating blood in 2008. Today, Amy donates platelets—a type of blood product that is in high demand, especially for helping cancer patients. Determined to continue the “Carey” tradition of inspiring others, Amy persuaded two coworkers who had never donated to join her in a pact to donate blood four times a year, Andrea’s boyfriend has joined the effort too.
And yes, she loves reconnecting with her community at each event—and never skips the tradition of stopping for ice cream at Mel’s Creamery. It’s these small, meaningful moments that make giving blood such a special experience.
CLOSING THOUGHTS Andrea Carey’s story is a shining example of the difference one person can make through dedication and compassion. Her decades of giving have not gone unnoticed.
