From the time he was a boy, Wesley Dullivan was destined to be a preacher. Growing up in Bridgeport, he had a natural way of bringing people together—surrounded by friends, deeply devoted to his family, and always ready with an encouraging word or a prayer. His faith was unshakable and his kindness contagious, even as he faced the daily challenges of Sickle Cell Disease.
That dedication was evident in every aspect of Wesley’s life. Whether he was preaching, comforting grieving families, or lifting spirits with his warm presence, he made it his mission to bring light wherever he went.
Reverend Carolyn Rogers recalled a moment that captured his selflessness: “I remember visiting Wesley in the hospital, during a time when he was in a lot of pain. We learned that there was another sick child in the hospital, and Wesley got up from his bed and went to visit the child to pray for that child. That is who he was. I feel that God gave him the gift so he could be a light for others.”
For those living with Sickle Cell Disease, blood transfusions are essential. They bring relief from pain, prevent complications, and provide the strength to keep going. Each time Wesley received a transfusion, it gave him another day to preach, to comfort, to love.
Wesley’s passing at the early of 37 was a devastating loss, but his legacy continues. To honor his memory, the AME Zion Church has committed to hosting annual blood drives, ensuring that others, including those fighting Sickle Cell Disease, have access to the life-saving transfusions they need.
Reverend Clayton, who has the lead the efforts along with his wife Vanessa over the last three years, spoke about why this mission is so important: “Wesley’s life was a testament to faith, perseverance, and service. By donating blood, we’re not only honoring his memory, but we’re also giving others the chance to live, to serve, and to inspire—just as he did.”
Wesley’s story is a reminder that donating blood isn’t just about saving lives—it’s about giving people like him the chance to keep making a difference.
In Wesley’s memory, we invite you to give that gift. Become a blood donor today. Behind every donation is story, a purpose, and the gift of more time for someone in need. Please join the Walters Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church in Bridgeport at their blood drive in memory of Reverend Wesley Dullivan, tomorrow, Saturday March 1st from 9am – 2pm.
