Donald Harris Jr. has spent his life serving others.
Known for his long-standing commitment to education and community, Donald devoted nearly four decades to Bloomfield High School, first as a student, then as an educator and principal. His leadership extended beyond the school walls through elected service and continued contributions to education at the local and state level. For Donald, service wasn’t learned later in life; it was there from the beginning.
“It’s critical to get involved,” Donald says. “It will make you feel good.”
That same spirit of service is reflected in his commitment as a blood donor. Donald first donated while in college, after a close friend was seriously injured in a car accident and required blood during hospitalization. The experience left a lasting impression. He came to understand the profound impact a single donation can have — and he has been giving ever since. In March, Donald celebrated 60 years of giving blood with his 56th donation, reaching the remarkable milestone of seven gallons donated.
His daughter, Carol Baldwin, was volunteering at the drive that day, proud of her father’s accomplishment. Inspired by his example, she rolled up her sleeve and donated blood as well — continuing a legacy of giving.
Looking back on the blood drives held at Bloomfield High School brings a smile to his face. He remembers the familiar routine, the sense of community, and especially the sandwiches. PB&J and tuna were staples, and Donald loved them. As a teacher, he would schedule his donation around lunchtime so he could sit, relax, and enjoy a well-earned meal before heading back to the classroom. What may have seemed like a small ritual became a cherished part of a much larger commitment.
Today, Donald continues to donate every few months, supported by members of his community and church who help organize blood drives throughout Hartford. Reflecting on each donation, he shares a simple but powerful sentiment: “When I come off that table, I say, ‘I did something good today.’”
Doing good feels good — and sometimes, it’s as simple as giving blood. That feeling is just an appointment away. Learn more at redcrossblood.org.
